If you are interested in Iran, in Iranian women’s movements, in women’s roles in Iranian film industry, you are invited to attend our workshop on Tuesday 8 November. Iranian women have been struggling for freedom and equal rights for more than a hundred years. However, the patriarchal ruling systems have ignored them, violently silenced them, or even have hijacked their efforts to legitimize their ideologies. The recent uprising is a continuation of this fight for liberty and equality. The death of Mahsa Jina Amini was a spark, rekindling a fight against injustice, inequality, and compulsory hijab. In this scholarly gathering, we will discuss topical issues related to women, Islam, and Iranian intellectual history. We try to answer questions such as, why does the Islamic Republic set strict rules specifically for women? Are these rules Islamic or ideological? How do Iranian women transgress many of such limits to express themselves? What does the slogan “woman, life, liberty” mean?
With lectures by Prof.dr. Nacim Pak-Shiraz (Edinburgh University), Zhinia Noorian (Utrecht University) and Assistant Professor Dr. Pooyan Tamimi Arab (Utrecht University).
The conference is both online and on location. Please register (d.farhosh-vanloon@uu.nl).
